In the cold mist of a dreary May day, senior Courtney Crews squats with her glove ready in front of her. As senior Erin Wade throws pitch after pitch at her, Crews catches each, bringing the sound of a quick snap.
It was getting dark on Tuesday evening, but two home runs from Tessa Ziemba and one from Becca Bigler provided enough power to light the Hofstra softball stadium in the Pride’s 6-1 win over Fordham. The win is Hofstra’s 21st in 22 games.
The Pride is indeed beginning to roll and it’s catalyst is junior pitcher Olivia Galati.
If there was any concern over just how elite a pitcher junior Olivia Galati is, those critics were silenced after the right-hander lifted the Hofstra softball team to the Hofstra Invitational Championship this weekend.
They say patience is a virtue. Looking at the schedule in the preseason, the Hofstra softball team knew that they would have a few tough tasks in its non-conference schedule. The beginning of the season was tough for the Pride, losing nine straight to start the year, but the first win was definitely worth the wait.
The road has not been kind to the Hofstra softball team, especially in the early part of the season. After going 0-3 at the Pirate Clash in North Carolina, the Pride continued its struggles at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Last season ended in heartbreak for the Hofstra softball team, losing two games against Georgia State for the 2011 CAA Softball championship. Georgia State would move on to the NCAA tournament and Hofstra faced a few long months to regroup.
The Hofstra softball team helped Head Coach Bill Edwards earn his 800th win with a sweep over UNC-Wilmington this past weekend. With the sweep, Edwards (800-374-3) is one of 21 Division I coaches with 800 wins.
