HARRISON, NJ – The New York Red Bulls played their first official MLS game at brand new Red Bulls Arena in Harrison, NJ on March 27 against the Chicago Fire. Before arriving at the game, spectators may not have heard about all the new amenities of the state of the art, $200 million stadium, but then again, those in attendance had trouble hearing anything through the rampant cheers of the Red Bulls faithful.
A week after Tom Pecora ended his career with the Pride, a new career began as Tim Welsh was introduced as Hofstra University’s head basketball coach on April 1, 2010. After a two-year hiatus from a coaching career that included ten years with Providence College and an assistant job under Jim Boehiem at Syracuse in the early 1990’s, Welsh returns to the sidelines at the Mack Sports Complex.
After an 11-9 loss to the University of Massachusetts, Hofstra men’s lacrosse, no. 8 in the nation, was looking to steady its ship and achieve win number 500 in program history. The Pride would be looking to make history as it hosted the Black Knights of Army.
Over the weekend the Hofstra Pride baseball team traveled to State College, PA for its first ever meeting with the Penn State Nittany Lions. After winning the series opener on Friday to push its win streak to six games, the Pride dropped the next three including a double-header sweep on Saturday to fall to 6-13 on the season.
The signing of Nick Johnson was disaster of a move by the Yankees for four reasons. Nick Johnson adds no versatility to the Yankees defense or power or speed to the offense. Johnson can only play first base or designated hitter; he is injury prone as shown by him missing all of the 2007 season. What makes his signing even worse is that for one million dollars more the Yankees could have resigned the hero of the 2009 World Series: Hideki Matsui.
What may be the least watched Olympic sport is making its way into the hearts of many at Hofstra. The Hofstra Equestrian team is looking to grow in popularity and prance its way to the top of its sport.
Hofstra lacrosse has proven to be an offensive juggernaut this season and its dominant attack has jolted the team to the top six in the national rankings. Much of the credit goes to All–American candidate Jay Card but even more may go to junior Jamie Lincoln in his first year with the Pride.
Much of the 2009-10 season for the Pride men’s and women’s golf team has been spent in the rough and sand traps.
Snowboarding has come a long way since Jake Burton and his pals were bumming around Londonderry Vermont on makeshift planks. Though seeing boarders on the slopes no longer elicits the same mouth agape from skiers that it used to, the sport is still far from being America’s pastime.
A smile crept over the face of 6-year-old Olivia Galati as she peered at her father and sister playing catch on the front lawn. With the sun and cool breeze beckoning her to join, young Olivia trotted outside to try her hand at hitting.
