It’s time to take down Matt Bisanz. This justice of the Student Government Association has hijacked the focus of an important University institution, for less-than-benevolent purposes. His efforts to spark an impeachment of SGA President Peter DiSilvio come, not surprisingly, in the wake of a lost bid to replace former SGA Vice President Simon Duncanson. That these accusations of electoral misconduct are coming to light so soon after Bisanz’s vice-presidential loss is proof that they are a thinly-veiled flexing of political muscle for the sake of healing his wounded ego.
Bisanz’s dirty politics detract from the true mission of SGA: to serve the students of Hofstra University. To this end, it is the opinion of Nonsense that President DiSilvio has thus far out-performed any SGA leader of the past decade. His unwavering support of student clubs and activities on campus, coupled with an incredible vision for the potential of the undergraduate student body, make him a bright spot at a largely disinterested and uninvolved university. The performance of the SGA executive should be judged on merit, taking into account the president’s successes and failures. Nonsense urges members of the Student Government Association to focus on the many successes of DiSilvio’s administration, and not the crybaby politics of a single member.
There is no realistic argument against the legitimacy of President DiSilvio’s electoral victory last spring. Bisanz was DiSilvio’s campaign manager, making him complicit in any alleged wrongdoing. Therefore, Bisanz’s active participation in the president’s campaign eliminates whatever credibility his indictment might have carried.
Furthermore, as a sitting justice of the SGA, Bisanz should be working to maintain impartiality, and to exist above political squabbles and maneuvering. It is not the role of a judge to bring charges against an individual. In doing so, Bisanz has shown his contempt for student justice, and the sharply political mentality that dominates his thinking.
SGA doesn’t need its own Karl Rove. It’s time for the members of SGA to rise above the petty arguments and ill-concealed maneuvering of political hacks like Matt Bisanz. To use the words of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Nonsense is waiting for student government “to really spread its wings and straighten up and fly right.”
