For the week ending Sept. 24, the Hofstra Pride’s junior setter Shellane Ogoshi was selected as the National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com). The award is yet another accolade for the Pride’s star setter, as just this season she has already won the CAA Player of the Week award twice. The CVU award however singles Ogoshi out on a not just a conference but a national scale, a much less common occurrence for Hofstra athletics. Ironically, two players from Pride women’s soccer team were also recognized nationally (Sue Weber and junior midfielder Marie Curtin). “It’s a great honor. I’m glad I could bring some publicity to the school. I owe a lot to the girls on the team, because I wouldn’t be able to do it without them and I owe a lot to Stephen Gorchov [the volleyball SID]”
Elizabeth Curley named CAA Player of the Week
For the third straight week a member of the Hofstra Pride volleyball team has been awarded the CAA Player of the Week award. This week however, it’s not the usual suspect, Pride setter Shellane Ogoshi. Instead, for the second time this season, the Pride’s senior middle blocker Elizabeth Curley has won the award. Curley first won the award earlier this season on Sept. 5. Her second CAA award comes on the heels of a strong weekend against both James Madison University and George Mason University. Curley led the Pride in kills during both matches with 18 against JMU and 14 against GMU. She was also the most consistent Pride player over the two match span with hitting percentages of .455 and .565 respectively. Curley leads the team in hitting percentage and blocks for the season. Curley gave credit to her fellow teammate and previous CAA Player of the Week for her big game against GMU saying, “I had some great sets from Shellane. Shellane’s an amazing player. The passing was on the digging was on so I could just get up their and get it past.” This marks the third straight week a Pride Player has won the award with Ogoshi winning the previous two weeks.
