Only one more conference series is left for the Pride this season and it is doubtful the team will drop more than one game to Delaware. The last time Hofstra did not sweep or win two out of three games in a conference series was in 2002 against Towson University. Since losing two of the three games in that series, the Pride has come out victorious in 23 straight conference series and has tied two others at one game apiece.
The Pride’s season is winding down with only a few games left after the cancellation of two games against Quinnipiac University this week. The three-game conference series at Delaware is scheduled for this weekend followed by a doubleheader at home against Lehigh University to wrap up the regular season.
Currently, Delaware is in fourth place in the conference at 8-9, whereas Hofstra leads the conference with a 13-4 record and is on track to win the conference once again. If the Pride can win the conference and host the CAA tournament, it would be a great advantage for the team. Hofstra has only lost two conference games at home this season and has displayed a few nearly flawless performances at Hofstra Softball Stadium.
This weekend’s series with Delaware is crucial for the Pride because it does not want to fall in the very dangerous trap of false sense of security in its ability to win the conference. Hofstra must show a strong performance and take home at least two games before having to take on Lehigh, a team that is unfamiliar to the Pride in the regular season final. If the Pride can win all three games against Delaware, that would secure the conference title and there would be no chance of surprise with Lehigh.
The CAA Tournament begins on Thursday, May 11 and continues through that Saturday on the home field of the regular season conference champion.
