Nothing is what it seems in Lucky Number Slevin, an entertaining, creative and twisty film starring Josh Hartnett as the down on his luck title character.
Directed by Paul McGuigan, the film features an all star cast, including Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci.
Even with these megawatt names, the film retains a low budget feel and a low key release. Hartnett knows his trade and delivers, even though he only appears in a bath towel for the films first 20 minutes.
The film’s strong point is definitely its story, which twists and turns until the very end. Slevin is contacted separately by two mob bosses (Freeman and Kingsley) and is quickly thrown in the middle of their feud.
Throw in an assassin, (Willis), and the detective (Tucci), and what sounds like a run of the mill film becomes anything but. The film’s low production value and cockiness may be a turn off for some people.
At some points, it’s as if the director stops paying attention to details, and some scenes are not very believable.
Lucky Number Slevin should be given a chance, if not for the twisty story, then for the all star cast and Hartnett’s performance.
