David Zucker, the director of Airplane and The Naked Gun series is at it again, this time poking fun at War Of The Worlds, The Village, Million Dollar Baby and The Grudge, in Scary Movie 4, a hilarious parody of popular culture.
Zucker takes over the series from its creator Keenan Ivory Wayans, who helmed the first two films.
The film was written by Craig Mazin and Jim Abrahams, who also wrote the screenplay for Airplane.
Anchored solidly by Craig Bierko, who plays Tom Ryan, a character very similar to Tom Cruise’s Ray Ferrier in War Of The Worlds.
The film centers on an alien invasion and mysterious happenings.
Obviously he has a love interest, warmly played by Anna Faris, a veteran of the Scary Movie films.
She has also recently appeared in Waiting, Just Friends, and Brokeback Mountain, one of the films parodied in Scary Movie 4.
Playing the President is Leslie Nielsen, who seems like he is channeling George W. Bush.
Nielsen, however, is not at his best; he’s either lost his comedic edge or was given weak lines to read.
Also appearing in Scary Movie 4 is the very odd paring of Dr. Phil and Shaquille O’Neal, who team up for the first scene for a parody of the Saw films.
A laundry list of celebrities also make appearances in the film, including Carmen Electra, Chris Elliot, Anthony Anderson, Cloris Leachman, James Earl Jones, Chingy, Little Jon, Michael Madsen, Molly Shannon and stand up comedian Dave Attell.
They each play small, but memorable parts, and everyone seems like they are having a blast.
Audiences can count on Scary Movie 4 for solid laughs and spot-on imitations of films (right down to the wardrobe and camera angles).
If you are not into slapstick, silly comedy, stay away. The film does, however, live up to fan and audience expectations.
