Men’s BasketballGeorge Mason made Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) history by advancing to the Final Four with an 86-84 win over Connecticut on Sunday. The Patriots are the first CAA team and the second ever 11th-seeded team to ever advance to Final Four. Mason will tip-off against the University of Florida on Saturday evening for the right to play LSU or UCLA for the National Championship.
BaseballJames Madison remained undefeated in conference play as the Dukes went 5-0 last week. They were led by CAA Player of theWeek Kellen Kulbacki, as the sophomore outfielder batted .737 (14-for-19) with four homers, nine runs scored and 12 RBI for the Dukes, who are currently on a 16-game winning streak. Harold Mozingo of VCU was named CAA Pitcher of the Week. Mozingo tossed a complete game, 2-hit shutout with nine strikeouts as VCU blanked the Pride, 12-0. He improved his record to 4-0 with a 1.77 ERA on the season.
Delaware’s Alex Buchholz was named CAA Rookie of the Week.The freshman batted .412 with four homers, eight RBI and eight runs. Buchholz hit his first collegiate career grand slam, but the Blue Hens are still winless in conference play.
SoftballAli Gardiner of UNC-Wilmington was named CAA Player ofthe Week. The freshman first baseman batted .600 (12-for-20) with a pair of home runs and 11 RBI as UNCW won the Best Western Catamount Classic tournament title. Delaware junior pitcher Carolynn Sloat earned the CAA Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing five complete games, posting a 4-1 record.Sloat pitched 36.0 innings with a 1.17 ERA, and recorded three shutouts on the week. Drexel pitcher/first baseman Ashlee Veilleux was named CAA Rookie of the Week.
Men’s Swimming & DivingDean Berman of UNCW and Tom Koucheravy of George Mason both earned All-American Honors at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Men’s & Women’s Tennis On the men’s side, three CAA teams were ranked in top75: VCU (17th), William & Mary (69th) and Old Dominion (71st). The highest ranked player is VCU junior Arnaud Lecloerec, ranked 21st in the singles circuit.
For the women, William & Mary is ranked No .20, with VCU right behind them at No. 21. In singles action, W&M junior Megan Moulton-Levy is No. 14 in the country and the VCU doubles team of Marianna Yuferova and Olga Borisovagarnered a No.14 ranking as well
