Campus water is safe for use despite a water main break in the Town of Hempstead yesterday, according to Stuart Vincent, Assistant Vice President of University Relations.
While University students were advised not to drink tap water in residence halls earlier today, the Uniondale Water District determined that the quality of campus water was safe for use after running a water quality test. The test took 24 hours to complete.
The 16-inch water main break yesterday morning caused a loss of service and/or reduced pressure in the district. The water main was isolated and water pressure was restored to most of the district.
The water department flushed all water mains yesterday to prevent possible contamination. They also– in conjunction with the Nassau County Department of Health– collected water samples for testing. The campus Plant Department also flushed all publicly accessible facilities.
Worried about possible contamination, the University sent out an advisory earlier today that said tap water may be used to shower, but it should not be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or preparing food.
However, after the water quality test, the Uniondale Water District told the Plant Department that while there was no contamination, students should still run each faucet for ten minutes before use to make sure the water is clean.
