As per The Hofstra Chronicle tradition, I was tasked with writing a senior send-off; however, I found it quite difficult to put into words what my relationship with this organization is.
Did I learn from this experience? Quite a bit. Was it enjoyable? Most of the time. I certainly am better off for joining. While I do not have much to say about this experience, I am grateful to the friends I have made in this club, particularly those whom I have worked with in the Opinion section and business manager position: Mackenzie, Ethan, Anthony, T-bone and Julia and, especially, Thomas “Normal” and Ryan “Monkey.”
I think it is these friendships that make us all willing to do unpaid labor for the Chronicle – trust me, it is a lot of responsibility. I think anyone who participates in this organization should be proud of themselves for contributing to student journalism.
I grew a lot as a writer and editor of the Chronicle, and I think I am better off because of that. When I first joined, I wrote a couple of stinkers for the Opinion section that, in hindsight, were really bad. I still contemplate asking them to be deleted. But I think that I have gotten better, even if it is just marginally so.
I also very much valued the relationships with all of the staff writers of the Opinion section. It was a pleasure editing their articles. I was also very pleasantly surprised to see many of the younger writers of Opinion move on to become editors of other sections.
I leave the Chronicle in hands better than mine: Thomas Saxa and Anthony Favilla will do a great job as editors. Anthony and Katie Buchalter will be the business managers, and I am sure that they will do a great job.
I hope that I improved the organization in some way over the course of my time here.
