45 High, a band from New York City, fronted by Pete Giambalvo, a University graduate, will be playing a benefit concert on Dec. 15 at Arlene’s Grocery.
Giambalvo graduated in 1994 with a degree in drama; however, he is now “really focusing on being a rock star,” he said.
The band is playing the show for the Ali Forney Center, a safe haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens.
The center was formed because many LGBT teens turn to the streets when they have no where else to go. It offers services including emergency housing and a family outreach program.
“It’s a strong statement,” Giambalvo said, about teaming up with the center. He has always felt compassion towards the gay community, a feeling that has followed him since college.
He attended “Madonna: Truth or Dare” on campus and heard people snickering at gay dancers in the show. He said that, even then, seeing homophobia bothered him.
“It was the first and last letter to the editor I ever wrote…I took a stand for gay people,” Giambalvo said.
Giambalvo said he was sympathetic because he was picked on in high school.
“We wanted to do something for the holidays…it seemed like an inspired choice,” Giambalvo said. “It just seems like a really good cause.”
Proceeds from ticket sales, including the cut of the money the venue would receive, will be given to the Ali Forney Center.
Giambalvo hopes to “create a friendship with the Hofstra community” and wants to play a show on campus next semester.
