As a former columnist and editorial board member of The Chronicle, I was shocked, surprised and disgusted by the decision of the editors to publish Jeremy Rappaport’s “opinion piece.”
The purpose of the opinion page is not to simply provide an opinion on an issue, but to inform and educate.
The opinion page offers a forum for analysis and thought, not ranting; that’s what blogs are for.
During my time at the University, I was very involved with Jewish life on campus, including the organizations mentioned in Rappaport’s article, and while I do agree with some of his criticisms, The Chronicle is not a place for attacks on individuals or organizations.
If Rappaport had included an analysis about whether these organizations are fulfilling their mission statements, that would have been more appropriate. If he was just unhappy with the way certain members of these organizations were conducting themselves, he always had the option of speaking to them directly about it (rather than lying).
I would hope the editors of The Chronicle would use more sound judgment in the future when determining the validity and appropriateness of articles.
