Font, the University arts and literature magazine that hits stands once a semester, is holding an event titled “Font Presents The X-Change” to promote recycling in an effort to help the campus “go green.”
The event will be held on Nov. 2 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Netherlands Cafeteria. Performers include student poets, students reading their own literature, the Imani dance team and a student band.
“We have an open-mic every semester and this time we wanted to focus on recycling in the Hofstra community because it’s an important issue right now,” said senior Ashley Gray, the editor-in-chief of Font. “We want to see an effort to keep the campus green at Hofstra.”
In a further effort, representatives of Font will be at an atrium table in the Student Center on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. collecting recyclable bottles.
They will be accepting glass and plastic bottles as well as cans; the one item they will not be collecting is paper. In addition, collectors will be stationed around both the north and south sides of campus on Nov. 2 collecting bottles from people as they walk by.e
Anyone who donates a recyclable item, whether one bottle or seven, receives a raffle ticket, which they can bring to the event and be entered in a raffle to win a water filter. Students also receive a prize for the amount of bottles they donate. A donation of one bottle gets a green ribbon and a raffle ticket. A donation of three bottles gets a Nalgene-like reusable plastic bottle and a raffle ticket. A donation of 10 bottles receives seeds for a house plant and a raffle ticket.
Font’s main goal is to raise awareness about the claim that disposable water bottles are not the best choice for drinking water. “The reason we wanted to create awareness about tap versus bottled water is because bottled water creates unnecessary waste, and it is being consumed when safe, free tap water is available at the same time,” said junior Becca Bellush, a member of Font.
There is no charge or admission requirement for the event. “We want to welcome [everyone] to the event to see the show [and] we just ask that if you have some bottles, bring them,” Bellush said.
