They may bend, but they will not break. That was the case in the Pride’s 33-28 win over local rival Stony Brook.
They have given up 82 points in four games. That averages to 20 points per game. With their high powered offense averaging only 24 points per game, the defense knows it has to step up its game.
Linebacker Gian Villante has led the way with 20 unassisted tackles and 22 assisted tackles. The Pride defense has forced four fumbles and has six interceptions; one of those coming late in the fourth quarter against Stony Brook to seal the victory.
“I’m not surprised that they are playing well, we were a top 30 defense in the country last year,” Head Coach Dave Cohen said.
Twice this season the defense has held the opposing offense scoreless in a half; at Furman and at Rhode Island. What is more impressive is that both games, the scoreless halves were the second halves, allowing the Pride offense to come back and win.
“Our defense has been doing a good job, but we need to be more physical,” Cohen said. The Pride defense many times played back up in their own territory on Saturday and allowed Stony Brook to run it in for scores.
The defense goes up against 1-3 Maine this week at home. The Black Bears are only averaging a little less than 12 points a game. Running back Jhamal Fluellen is the main threat, averaging almost 92 yards per game on the ground and has three touchdowns.
