First G was coming. Then, liberation was coming. What’s next? Is the circus coming?
Probably not, judging by the demonstration led by student-run animal rights organization SOAR (Student Organization for Animal Rights) that took place on Memorial Quad on Monday and Tuesday. As students walked to class, images of animal and human slavery alike were juxtaposed in a shocking, almost grotesque fashion-enough to make your stomach turn.
For some, it opened eyes to vegetarianism. Others thought it was unnecessary (especially on the way to Bits-and-Bytes.)
Its advertising campaign, “Liberation is Coming” featured two designs sprawled across dorms and classroom hallways: one with a single human hand stretched upward; the other, what appears to be a monkey’s paw, clawed around a steel cage. However, the ambiguity of the slogan-similar to the G campaign-left the student body wondering, “What is that supposed to mean?”
The layout was designed by PETA, notoriously known for using striking, radical photos to conjure an emotional response from its viewers. These photos are by no means fake-seals being clubbed, people beaten, slaughtered pigs in piles-but the way they are presented aim more at the heart rather than hard fact.
Specifically, PETA 2 is geared at high school and college activists to generate awareness of their cause on campus. On the organization’s Web site, PETA 2 encourages students to “question authority” by downloading and regurgitating campaigns such as “Kentucky Fried Cruelty,” “Cut Out Dissection” and “Veganize Your Cafeteria.” By following this particular school of thought, PETA encourages students to be “individuals” by scribing to their agenda.
Going veg? That’s great. It can do wonders for your health and save many lives of animals in the process. Just don’t shove it in our faces.
