With a recent loss to Yale on Friday, which was preceded by an 11 day lay- off, Hofstra’s Women’s Field Hockey team traveled to Syracuse University to face the Orange on Sunday.
Nadine Surak, who has a registered 1.91 goals-against-average, allowed a goal by Lelia Sacre in the first half, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead into halftime. Krisha Giammarco replaced Surak at the beginning of the second half.
The Pride reentered J. S. Coyne Stadium rejuvenated, and forward Pemba Ramdoo scored on a breakaway at 35:29, tying the score 1-1. Gloria Nantulaya, who was later named Big East Player of the Week for scoring two game- winning goals against both Hofstra and Rutgers, rebounded off of a penalty corner and scored the tiebreaking goal at 44:32, securing an overtime win.
The Pride defeated the Orange in the teams’ previous two match- ups. In 2004 however, Syracuse won in a similar overtime game. Syracuse’s Women’s Field Hockey team advances its all-time record with the Pride to 11-3.
After the non- conference loss to Syracuse, Hofstra’s record falls to 3-4 on the season. Originally ranked fourth in the 2007 CAA Field Hockey Preseason Coaches Poll, the Pride has fallen to seventh place. Currently, Delaware (7-1) and James Madison (5-2) sit atop the CAA.
As the girls look to advance their overall record, the Pride is set to play a non- conference home match versus Quinnipiac on Wednesday. Hofstra meets the Drexel Dragons at a crucial conference match on the road, and hosts the Virginia Commonwealth Rams at home on Fri., Sept. 28.
