As graduation approaches, most seniors may be worrying about finding a job, getting an apartment, and paying off loans, while a select few choose to contribute back to the Hofstra community.
In spirit of the importance of giving back, the Senior Challenge Committee was created beginning with the class of 2005. The 2005 committee challenged fellow seniors to raise $2,005 upon graduation. Although they did not reach their goal during this first trial, the challenge left behind the idea for future graduating classes to give back to the University community.
“They want to show their appreciation for the invaluable education they received at the University by giving back and helping to enhance the University experience for current and future students,” said Noel Correnti, associate director of Alumni Relations.
By the following year, however, the graduating class was able to exceed the goal.
“The next year the Class of 2006 exceeded their goal of $2,006 by raising more than $2,700 for the fund,” he added.
The fund helps support students through scholarships, financial aid and expanding the academic offerings on campus. This year’s committee, which is made up of any seniors that wish to join, hopes to raise $2,007.
“The Senior Challenge Committee will participate in table promotions and personally reach out to their classmates with a program called Dorm Storms.” said Correnti. “Also, we will be having discussions about planning an event in late March to celebrate graduation and increase participation in the Challenge.”
By participating on the committee, seniors will be able to work collaboratively with the Alumni Relations staff and learn about the various benefits and services available to them after graduation. Upon graduation, students join a network of more than 107,000 alumni.
As alumni of the University, former students can become a part of the GOLD group which stands for Graduates Of the Last Decade. GOLD recruits students to attend the University, provides career mentorship and participates in alumni committees.
“The seniors must reach their goal of raising $2,007 by May 20,” said Correnti. “If the class reaches its goal by May 20, President Stuart Rabinowitz has agreed to match the funds raised, potentially doubling the class of 2007’s contribution. The goal is for the class to present a check to President Rabinowitz during commencement.”

The committee of University seniors deliberate on how to raise money.
