The women’s soccer team is back in first place after a late-game win over Georgia State on Sunday. The Pride, 9-5-2, now shares first with rival Old Dominion and is 6-1-1 in conference play. In the thriller, it was freshman midfielder Courtney Breen who broke the 3-3 tie. The game was a bit of a roller coast as the Pride broke out with an early after goals by sophomore forwards Dana Bergstrom and Salma Tarik. The team held that lead into half time, but things got shaky early in the second half when Georgia State tied things up. That tie did not last for long, when 30 seconds after Georgia State’s second goal, sophomore forward Kayla Pifer scored her first goal of the season. Georgia State then answered back with a corner kick and tied the game up at 3-3. With 7:24 left in the game, Breen knocked in a go-ahead goal to give the Pride a 4-3 win. It was the first time in 13 conference games that the Pride allowed a regulation goal and It was not goalie Krystal Robens’ best game as she only had one save.
The victory came on the heals of the team’s first game back home, a 2-0 win over UNC Wilmington. The team resumes play on the road as they face VCU on Friday and James Madison on Sunday.
