Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably well aware that Britney Spears is “back.” A few short weeks following her victorious night at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards, it has been confirmed that the pop princess is set to make yet another comeback. Although her 2007 album, “Blackout,” received mostly favorable reviews, it was clear that Britney was in no shape to be promoting an album.
Spears’ new album, “Circus,” is set to hit store shelves Dec. 2, her 27th birthday. The first single off the album, “Womanizer,” was released for radio airplay on Friday. The space age, man-bashing track is undeniably catchy. With a sleek, repetitive (in a good way) and dance-inducing chorus, the song has major hit written all over it. When Spears grittily sings “Must mistake me, you’re the sucker / To think that I would be a victim, not another/ Say it, play it how you wanna / But no way I’m ever gonna fall for you,” there is no choice but to sing along. The single was supposed to be released on Monday, Sept. 22, but after a 40-second clip leaked onto the internet only a few days before, the producers of the track, The Outsyders, decided to do some more mixing.
The funny thing is, not much has changed stylistically about Britney’s music since her last album. “Womanizer” wouldn’t be out of place on “Blackout,” and maybe that’s a good thing, considering every single from that album saw radio airplay.
Spears seems to be getting a warm welcome back from students at the University. Freshman E.J. Piccirillo says, “I think it’s easy for people to look at her and scrutinize her, but if it was any of us in her situation, who knows how we would react? I think if she can capture an audience like she used to, then it’s a good thing.” Senior Steve Stano feels the same way. “I think she went a little overboard, but she looks great. Her new song is awesome and she seems like she got her act together.” Freshman Julie Bass says, “I think it’s really amazing that Britney has come out of what she was going through and that she is getting her life back together…I am looking forward to her new music because I think she’s a great artist.”
Britney was recently photographed in downtown Los Angeles entering and leaving the shooting for her single’s accompanying video. Spears was fitted with a black bobbed wig, aviator sunglass, and red lipstick. The video is expected to premiere in mid-October. The pop star recently put her Mediterranean-style mansion, dubbed “The Summit,” on the real estate market for $7.9 million, as E! News has confirmed. It seems that our favorite tabloid superstar is finally changing her life for the better.
Give “Womanizer” a few spins in anticipation for “Circus,” Britney’s sixth studio album, which is reportedly going to be followed by a world tour.
