Hofstra Volleyball defeated St. John’s in the 7th Annual Queens-Nassau Cup in a five-set victory and improved their record to 5-5 on Tuesday. In the win, senior outside hitter Lauren Engle had 19 kills in the game, putting her over the thousand mark at 1,015. Engle is now the 12th player in Hofstra Volleyball history to reach the 1,000 kill milestone, and is the first player to do so since All-American Elizabeth Curley in 2006. Other players making big contributions in the victory were junior right side Monica Knight with 11 kills and junior outside hitter Harmonie Calinda with 10 kills and a team-high 15 digs. Junior setter Chrissey Cruz got a double-double with 44 assists and 13 digs. With the Pride winning the first and third sets, St. John’s won the fourth 25-14, and sent the match to a fifth set. In the final set, the Pride tallied 9 kills with 4 coming from Engle in the thrilling 15-13 defeat. The Pride returns to the court against Rice on Friday in Bowling Green, Ohio at the 2008 BGSU Best Western Invitational.
