A new announcement on the University online portal states that the Department of Public Safety will be implementing a new parking registration procedure beginning Sept. 22 which will be strictly enforced beginning Oct. 1. Because they actually enforced the old one? Because parking lots were being monitored by Public Safety before, so now it’s going to happen even more-so? Didn’t think so.
The new procedure says that everyone with a currently registered vehicle must get a rearview mirror parking tag. The mirror tag will be linked to the window sticker that is already on registered vehicles.
According to the announcement, the mirror tag will “serve as a visual check as cars enter parking areas and will be checked to ensure they match the code on the window sticker.” Isn’t this going to cause a whole lot of traffic? The way they make it sound it seems as though officers are going to stop every vehicle, check the mirror tag, and then go to the window tag and make sure the two match.
Students already have enough issues looking for parking spots and being late for class because of it. Extra traffic isn’t necessary. However, if this new parking procedure will stop illegal parking, then they should go for it.
Unfortunately, it seems that this new procedure might just encourage students to attempt to get away with not registering their cars. This will probably just lead to more cars being towed and then lost-apparently the Department of Public Safety also has issues when it comes to noting where vehicles are towed.
“Vehicles without both the mirror tag and correlating window sticker will not be permitted to park on campus. This will be strictly enforced beginning Oct. 1,” states the announcement. Hmm, is it because all these important people are coming for the Presidential Debates and we have to look like we actually pay attention to what goes on in our parking fields? Strictly enforced beginning Oct. 1 and ending, what, Oct. 5? Four days is generous.
What about visitors? Obviously visitors’ vehicles won’t be covered with University parking stickers. How will an officer know if the driver really is a visitor or a student that doesn’t want to decorate their vehicle in barcodes?
How about we all just paint our cars blue and gold and only cars painted in Hofstra Pride can enter? Things would go faster that way.
