It is of little surprise that no Hofstra football players were selected in last weekend’s NFL draft. Despite producing several solid professionals, Hofstra has not yet gained the reputation of an elite football program. However, several of the Pride’s graduating players will receive a chance to play on Sunday.
Five-foot ten-inch cornerback Kyle Arrington signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, despite going undrafted. Arrington had 30 tackles in his senior season for the Pride along with an interception, and is the Pride’s only player with a contract at this point.
Another graduating corner, DeWayne Whitaker, was invited to participate in minicamp with the Washington Redskins. Two-hundred and eighty-two pound defensive tackle Shemiah LeGrande received a similar minicamp invitation from the Detroit Lions, and linebacker Gian Villante was extended an invitation by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Hofstra’s own New York Jets invited two Pride players to participate in their minicamp: wide receiver Charles Sullivan and running back Kareem Huggins. The two will be able to participate in the final Jets minicamp on Hofstra’s campus before the team moves into their new facility.
Naturally, nothing is guaranteed to any of these men, and only Arrington has been offered a contract thus far. The other players, however, have chances to gain contracts if they show determination and exemplary play in camp.
