“I’ve been using this [line] for a while. I am kind of like the ugly duckling, an unknown hero,” said Chris Johnston, a senior receiving his B.F.A. in theatre arts. “Maybe quirky,” he finally decided upon for the one word used to describe himself.
A fan of Robin Williams and Bing Crosby, Johnston says that comedy is his shtick. Many people note him for his crazy antics and some may call his current acting project crazy.
On May 4 & 5, Johnston will be performing in “Fully Committed,” a one-man play. There are over thirty-five different characters and Johnston will play all of them.
Earlier in the semester Johnston was working on another piece, but he was unhappy with how that was working for him. He then switched to this new one-man play. Because of the quick change, Johnston has only been rehearsing for three weeks, but if his performance is like any of his others, it is bound to impress.
Johnston is also the president of the Spectrum Players, a club on campus that will be receiving the club of the year award from Student Activities. He is also a brother in Alpha Psi Omega, a theater honors society. He is known as Brother Nathan Lane, an actor that he looks up to.
Johnston transferred from Wagner College in pursuit of a “more intense major.” At the University, he not only got the training he wanted, but he also made a name for himself in the drama department.
For the future, Johnston hopes to pursue “anything that has to do with actively creating and using the skills I’ve learned at Hofstra.”
When asked who has made an impact on his life at the University, he replied, very graciously, that everyone has inspired him for different reasons, both as an actor and a person.
Editor’s note: Chris Johnston requested that he be the Dutch Treat of the week instead of the Flying Dutchman. “I thought it would be hysterical,” he said.
