“Rewarding” was the word of the day, at least for Valentina Steen, a 21-yearold, junior, majoring in broadcast journalism. That’s how she described most of what she does.
Steen is an active member of WRHU and Hofstra TV. She is also a resident assistant (RA) in Estabrook Hall, the broadcast journalism representative on the Student Advisory Board and she recently landed an internship at Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).
As a member of WRHU, Steen broadcasts for the “Morning Show,” “Studio South” and she DJs for “Uncharted Territory.”
“It’s a unique environment,” Steen said. “You can get your hands on anything. It’s a professional experience and it’s just so rewarding to see your work.”
She is the host of “Director’s Cut” on Hofstra TV, a 30-minute segment that airs every semester that spotlights a film student. Steen interviews the student and plays parts of films that the student has made, either for class, or on their own time, on the show. “I want to get their stuff on air,” she said. “That’s why I love to do it.”
“I have probably the most amazing staff on campus,” Steen said about her RA staff “We always make the best of every situation. It’s just a give and take.”
Over the summer, Steen will broadcast, report, edit, etc., for Transit Transit, on the MTA channel. She will cover transportation stories about subways, trains, buses, security measures and much more.
Steen is not shy when giving advice. “Go to the department and ask questions,” Steen advises. “Go to the places where people are getting involved. Be persistent. You can’t ever give up. Get your name out there…and always make time for yourself.”
