“Sloppy Ground” is the second solo album released by country artist Eric Chenaux. Country music has grown increasingly popular in recent years with the emergence of artists such as Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood. Should Chenaux be allowed to continue making music, it will likely lead to the downfall of country music.
All of his songs are very weird. “Am I Lovely” is a five-minute confession about how much he wants his significant other to ask him if he’s lovely. No, Eric, you’re not…and neither is this ridiculously long “song.”
The lyrics aren’t the only weird things about the songs. Each track is choppy and sounds more like chanting than singing. This could also be caused by Chenaux’s lack of singing ability; he sounds more like a whining old man than a smooth country crooner.
The fact that this CD is considered “country music” is puzzling because it sounds more like alternative rock. Interestingly, there’s also an Indian vibe to his album as Chenaux makes his banjo sound more like a sitar.
His music has a very mellow tone to it, but it’s almost too mellow. Doctors should prescribe “Sloppy Ground” to insomniacs because they would fall asleep listening to it, guaranteed. His music is boring. There’s no other way of putting it. Most of the songs have no climax and just seem to drag on-and-on before simply ending. “Have I Lost My Eyes” is the only one that is somewhat upbeat and melodious, it is also the sole track which Chenaux did not write himself.
Ultimately, Chenaux’s album is a complete mess and a fine example of what not to sound like when recording a country music album.
