Williamsburg,VA-After Friday’s game getting postponed due to rain, The Pride sluggers dropped all three games to William & Mary.
In Saturday’s contest, the Pride snapped its four-game win streak as the Tribe of William & Mary plated 20 unanswered runs en route to a 21-6 victory. The W&M team went up 1-0 early in the first, but Hofstra responded, scoring five runs in the second and one in the third to make it 6-1.
In the second Elliot Hagburg led off with a home run to tie the score at one. Anthony Sarno singled, moved to second on an error and came home on Nick Panzarella’s single up the middle. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Chris Mentrasti drove home Panzarella with an RBI infield single for a 3-1 lead. Tom Legregni then reached on an error to drive home the fourth Pride run before Matt Prokopowicz’s bases-loaded walk drove home the fifth and final run of the inning. The Pride tacked on a sixth run in the third inning as Dave Cole homered to right field.
The score remained stagnant until the bottom of the fifth when the Tribe got four runs. The home team went up to stay in the sixth as William & Mary scored six run to go up 11-6. The Tribe added three runs in the seventh and seven in the eighth to close out the scoring.
In game one of the Sunday doubleheader William & Mary won 2-0 off Mike Sheridan’s two-run homer. In game two, a late Pride rally fell short as the visitors lost 7-6.
Game one of the twin bill was a pitching showdown between Hofstra starter Rob Kumbatovic and Tribe pitcher Tyler Truxell. Kumbatovic threw a six-inning complete game and scattered 10 hits with six strikeouts. Truxell went 5 1/3 and allowed two hits. Jeremy Neustifter pitched a perfect top of the seventh for the save.
In the second game of the day, the Tribe came back scoring three runs in the sixth and seventh innings, to make a 3-1 deficit a 7-3 lead.
Hofstra rallied in the eighth, loading the bases, and scored one run on Dave Cole’s RBI base-on-balls. The Pride tacked on two runs in the ninth as Dion Pouncil scored on a wild pitch and Matt Kougasioan delivered a run-scoring single. But Neustifter ended the rally and the Pride left two runners on, including the tying run at second base.
Hofstra fell to 0-3 in CAA play and 4-6 overall, while William & Mary improved to 4-2 in league play and 11-6 overall
