Sophomore sociology major, Isabelle Goodman already has plenty to show for her studies here at the University. She is currently the president of the Progressive Students Union (PSU), an organization that strives for social change through means of education. Goodman works through PSU “to create tolerance and awareness on issues relating to human rights, race, ethnicity, women’s rights, gay rights, religious plurality, environmental rights and animal rights.”
She is also interning with the Center for Civic Engagement. Their mission statement describes the organization as “a University-based institute, designed to strengthen democratic values by encouraging students to actively participate as knowledgeable citizens in their campus, local, state, national and global communities.”
This avid on-campus activist rounds off her busy schedule as an employee of the Office of Student Leadership and Activities. To keep up with her full and busy life at the University, Goodman lives on campus, but she does not consider herself too involved in campus life.
Overall, Goodman says she enjoys being a student at the University and is pleased with her choice to attend here. “I have enjoyed the activities I have taken on and I have a more focused goal of what I want to do in the future,” she adds.
So what does the future hold for this woman of action?
Ideally, she’d choose to work with various non-profit organizations that champion good causes. She’d love to help them plan programs for fund raising.
It can be hard for any student to maintain a balance in their schedules between work and class, but Goodman is confident. “It’s hard to stay on top of everything, but as long as I stay organized it’s not so bad,” she says.
