The Hofstra softball team recently took a one-game lead in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with a crucial 6-1 rubber game win over Georgia State Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Softball Stadium. With the win, Hofstra is now 22-16 overall and 11-3 in CAA play. There are six league games remaining.
Senior leftfielder Melissa Hodge was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double as well as a home run in the final game of the three-game conference series. Ace pitcher, senior Kayleigh Lotti, threw a two-hitter to earn the win, her 15th of the season. Lotti also recorded her 937th career strikeout in the win.
The Pride won the first game of Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader 2-1. Senior second baseman Casey Fee hit a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh and came home after the relay throw from centerfield was errant. Georgia State won the second game 3-2 on a tiebreaking two-run home run from Panther shortstop Rachel Cunningham in the sixth inning.
For her performance, Fee was named CAA Player of the Week. Fee batted .526 over five games for the Pride last week, including multi-hit games in each of her last four games. She was 3-for-4 in a non-league win at Fordham last Wednesday, then batted 6-for-11 in the Georgia State series.
The Pride has not lost a conference series at home since the 1991 season, when it was swept in a doubleheader by Drexel in the East Coast Conference. Hofstra is an impressive 91-9 in its last 100 home games against conference teams.
Hofstra was slated to host St. John’s University this past Wednesday at 4 p.m. but it was rained out and will not be rescheduled. The Pride will entertain Long Island-rival Stony Brook this Thursday at 4 p.m.
