Artists on campus have recently found a new creative outlet with the Hofstra Association of Graphic Artists. HAGA, open to anyone interested in making or exploring art, was created last year in order for artists on campus to learn about different graphic design programs and work together on different projects.
HAGA has organized several events in the past which have not only promoted the artwork of members, but also provided an opportunity for artists to learn and explore different areas of graphic artistry.
“Not All Artists Are Starving” brought together Fine Arts alumni and HAGA members to discuss jobs post-graduation.
“The idea to hold [it] came from personal experience of finally being able to follow the career path that I truly enjoy,” said Emily Miethner, co-president of HAGA. “I wanted to help others become more comfortable knowing that there are careers for artists.”
According to Doreen Dardashtian, the Miethner’s co-president, the event had a great turnout. “It was the first Career Center event with the Fine Arts Department ever at [the] University,” said Dardashtian.
In the beginning of the year, HAGA hosted “Rock Out with Your Art Out” where members designed band merchandise.
HAGA also participated in the ‘Art of Healing’ hosted by the Progressive Students Union. “It was a concert and art show… pertaining to issues of social injustice.” said Dardashtian.
“Our memeber’s art made up the majority of the visual arts display,” added Miethner.
One of the club’s future goals is to set up a network for Alumni Graphic Designers.
HAGA meets on Wednesdays from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in 220 Calkins Hall. Interested students can check out the facebook group or email [email protected] for more information.
