Name: Steve Cooney
Year: Senior
Major: Print Journalism
How would you describe your collection?
They are just a bunch of pictures I took for The Chronicle. Most of them are sports photos: basketball, football and lacrosse mostly. The others are pictures from when I went up to a tattoo convention in Detroit.
How did you get started as an artist?
I don’t even know if I would really consider myself an artist; that is a strong word. I never really tried to make art; I would call it more photojournalism than art. I love pictures because my family has always been really big on them; my mom has pictures all over the house. I also love doing sports and things on culture or life.
What are your inspirations?
I like sports and documenting people. I also love telling stories. As far as photographers, go I am a huge huge fan of Ashley Gilbertson, Peter Beste, Kevin Lynch, Mary Ellen Mark and basically anyone who takes pictures for Sports Illustrated. Also, as an intern at Vice, I became a big fan of Roe Ethridge and Ryan McGinley.
What activities are you involved in?
I’m Editor-in-Chief of The Chronicle.
What do you hope to do after graduation? Will art continue to be a big part of your life?
I really want to do the whole photojournalism thing after graduation. I really either want to get on with a team or go overseas. I have a big thing for Africa, Thailand, India and most of the Middle East. Africa for the world cup would be a dream.
