“I like colors and the ’90s, but I’m not a hipster, despite what my friends say,” Fiona tells me as she explains how the ’90s television show “Clarissa Explains It All” has had an impact on her Crayola-colored wardrobe. “And, I also really want to get a crop top.”
“I used to wear color corduroy flairs in high school. I didn’t know how to dress; think ‘turquoise jeans,'” Fiona laughs. She still dictates the colors of the rainbow from her pink skinny jeans to her highlighter sweatshirts. “And my aunt gave me a furry pink jacket; I had to wear it but it was so hideous.”
“I have had an obsession with dresses lately. I have a velvet mini dress, but I don’t wear it here. I like clothing like that, especially if it was from the ’90s. I used to take my sister’s old clothing when I was little-she was a teenager in the ’90s. I still take her clothes.”
“So what would you consider a hideous piece of clothing?” I ask Fiona.
“Wide leg pants. They are not attractive on anyone. I’m also tired of the American Apparel fad.”
“As for your hometown, I know you told me it was San Francisco-has that influenced you?”
“In the summer I work at a coffee shop-girls there dress indie. One dyes her hair lavender. It’s a dirty hippie store-there are lots of interesting-looking people.”
Much has changed since her past years of furry pink and corduroy flairs, yet Fiona is still able to infuse a more mature shade of color into her look.
“My red hair is not natural, but it pulls together my look. My hair was a brown that did not highlight. I once got it done at a salon, and now I cannot dye it from a box.” Fiona pauses. “I don’t like it when you can tell something is a dye job. I’m not one for peroxide. A guy at a journalism program in the city convinced me at the last minute not to go blonde.”
“What else influences you?”
“I like colorful electronic music. As for people, I’d say Blake Lively from Gossip Girl. I like her style. I was watching Gossip Girl one time, and I had these bright yellow heels tucked away in my closet, and all of a sudden I saw them on Blake Lively. She was wearing my bright yellow heels!” Fiona exclaims, explaining it all.
