Senior TV/video major Steve Pellegrino is involved with a lot of things on campus, but his favorite part of every activity is the opportunity it gives him to meet all kinds of people. As a hardworking member of WRHU and dedicated Senior Resident Asssistant of Netherlands South, Pellegrino is involved with students and faculty of all ages, and it is this that he treasures the most from his college experience so far.
“It’s nice to walk across the unispan and be able to say hi to a lot of people I know because I’ve had experience working with them,” says Pellegrino.
Pellegrino has been a member of WRHU since his freshmen year at Hofstra. For the past two years, he has been working mostly on two different shows, Studio South and The 80’s Overdrive. For Studio South, which he describes as “kind of like ’60 Minutes’ for radio,” he is a package producer, a show producer and works on engineering, among other things.
The 80’s Overdrive is a show that Pellegrino and one of his friends came up with and began producing about two years ago. The show runs on Sunday nights from 11 p.m. until midnight, and in addition to playing ’80s music, the DJ’s discuss all kinds of ’80s pop culture.
“We feel like we grew up in the wrong decade… we’re just really into all ’80s pop culture,” says Pellegrino about coming up with the idea with his friend, junior Eric Pahlke. “We’ll watch a crappy ’80s movie every week, just to get a laugh out of it. We’re really into that type of stuff, and none of the radio station shows really offered the ability to talk and be creative like that, so we felt like we really needed to do something. We wanted to add some personality to our show and be able to talk a little bit and have fun with the audience and just enjoy doing the show.”
Pellegrino works as the Senior Resident Assistant of the Netherlands South dorm, where he is very involved with the freshmen students. He runs hall counsel for the building with another RA in which they put on large scale programs that are meant to help get students out and socializing. One such past event was an ice cream social.
This summer will mark the fourth consecutive year that Pellegrino has taught students about video production at the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts in Huntington, Long Island. He also works as an intern at News 12 Long Island, where he has put in about 18 hours a week since January. He works in the studio, doing a lot of programming and work on camera operations.
“I’m working [on] getting over the seeing-people-you’ve-seen-on-the-air-for-years thing,” says Pellegrino. “Once you get past that, you realize that TV actually is a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun.”
