Student Government Association (SGA) Senator Robin Doublebower was charged and found guilty during an Executive Session of the Senate at Tuesday night’s meeting. She currently remains an SGA senator, and no further actions have been taken thus far, according an SGA press release.
At the time of Executive Session, SGA had 54 senators in membership. To formally hold a meeting, they must have a quorum — half of the senators plus one — 28 senators. While it is unknown how many senators were present during last night’s executive session, a 2/3 vote is required to remove a senator, which would require 36 senators.
According to Jared Berry, SGA vice president, a majority is also required to pass impeachment legislation. However, he was unable to comment on the executive session proceedings.
Later in the meeting Senator Brian Marquis, fundraising chair, proposed a resolution on behalf of Berry concerning the Human Resources and Student Employment. Marquis wrote the resolution about the reimplementation of an old Student Employment rule, which limits students to one on-campus job only. It was passed by a unanimous vote.
The resolution concluded that because the student body has expressed “negative commotion” in response to Human Resources’ decision, Berry, Marquis and Student Services Chair Ashley Kowall will investigate the reason behind the reimplementation and present the findings to the Senate by no later than the end of March.
According to the resolution, Human Resources is unable to provide an answer for the unexpected reinforcement, and if they do not provide an answer by the end of March, Berry Marquis and Kowall will recommend to Human Resources and “higher administration” to remove the old rule.
