Women’s lacrosse:
With sticks and spirits raised last Sunday, the women’s lacrosse team broke its huddle chanting, “Do work!” This phrase foretold their very challenging game ahead. The Pride certainly did work–and a lot of it in keeping Stony Brook from scoring a ton of goals.
After a rocky start, the Pride gained possession from a defensive play by sophomore Ali Sperduti who sent the ball out of the end zone. It came right back as Stony Brook’s captain Nicole Ranaldo ran straight down the field with a clear shot to the goal.
With Stony Brook leading 9-3 after half time, Ranaldo scored two more goals on Hofstra. For Hofstra, sophomore attack Brooke Rogala penetrated the net, followed by junior defender Michele Fiore and attack Rose Gatto who each scored goals, raising the score to 11-6. The Pride could not maintain this momentum in the second half and lost 18-6.
Its next and final Fall tournament will be on Friday, Nov. 5 in Maryland, where the Pride will be playing Towson, UVA, and UMD.
Men’s Soccer:
The men’s club soccer team sealed a successful Fall season racking more wins than losses after its first time participating in the New York Collegiate Club Soccer League. The Pride played SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Albany, Aldelphi and Union College, going 4-3-1 overall with wins against Albany and Adelphi. In the NYCCSL, the top two teams from each division move on to playoffs. Hofstra, ranking third in its division, just missed playoffs after losing to SUNY New Paltz two weekends ago.
A major component of maintaining a strong team is the recruitment process and the constant search for new players, according to president Craig Wolgast. “We try to get as many players as we can just so we have a bigger pool,” he said. Although Wolgast did not get quite as many freshmen this season as hoped for, he feels the sophomores are extremely talented and ready to teach new players the ropes this spring.
The men’s club team will finish out the remainder of the season playing non league games. The Pride is facing Yale this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hofstra’s soccer stadium.
Men’s ultimate frisbee:
The men’s ultimate frisbee team is 5-8 this season after winning against Princeton, Stony Brook, Towson and TCNJ. The team went 2-4 at its tournament last weekend at the University of Delaware. After struggling the first day, the Pride redeemed itself the second day in a challenging feat by beating TCNJ by one point in sudden death.
According to Patrick O’Brien, captain of the team, the aim of fall tournaments is to give freshmen ample playing time.
“The freshmen really want to prove to us why they want to be on this team and are doing a great job,” said O’Brien.
The Pride’s next tournament is November 13 and 14 near Washington D.C.
