The Hofstra University Museum is hosting “Acquired Riches: Highlights from the Hofstra University Museum” at the Emily Lowe Gallery and “75 Stories for 75 Years” at the David Filderman Gallery and the Axinn Library in honor of Hofstra’s 75th anniversary. “Acquired Riches” started on Sept. 1st and “75 Stories for 75 Years” will begin on the 23rd. Both events will have an opening reception to commemorate the University’s 75th anniversary.
Geri Solomon, The University’s Archivist and Assistant Dean of Special Collections will be serving, as curator at the opening reception of “75 Stories for 75 Years.” The reception will be open to the public on Sept. 23rd between 4-6p.m. on the 9th and 10th floors of the Axinn Library. “75 Stories for 75 Years” will exhibit such stories as the founding of Alpha Theta Beta and the 1956 football team. The exhibit will run through Feb. 4th.
The showcase “Acquired Riches: Highlights From the Hofstra University Museum Collection” will have its reception between 2-4 p.m. in the Emily Lowe Gallery. This free reception will have dance performances by Hofstra University students under the direction of Adjunct Assistant Professor of Drama and Dance Dyane Harvey. This program will show off the best pieces of The University’s extensive 5,000 piece collection. Due to the scale of the collection, approximately one percent of the collection can be shown at any time. The collection has art and pieces from six continents that range from the pre-Columbian era to new and contemporary pieces.
The Hofstra University Museum was founded in 1963 and is one of the few museums in the U.S. to be accredited by the American Association of Museums. The Museum is also opened year-round and is free to public.
