New men’s basketball coach Tim Welsh was suspended without pay pending an investigation by the University Friday after being arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.
According to reports, Welsh, 49, was driving his 2006 Lexus at about 1 a.m. in Levittown when a Nassau County police officer saw him stopped at a green light. The officer pulled him over on suspicion of DWI and issued a Brethalyzer test, which he failed. Reports say that Welsh was allegedly passed out at the wheel.
He was taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor DWI. He will be arraigned Friday in Hempstead.
The University released the following statement:
“We have learned through media reports of the charges against Mr. Welsh. Effective immediately, he has been suspended without pay, while the University investigates the charges against him.”
Welsh was named the coach of the men’s basketball team at a press conference on April 1.
