If you are one of the several students who attended any of the “Debate ‘08” events on campus, you have Tyler GreenPope to thank.
GreenPope, a junior speech communications major, served as the student chairman for the student portion of the “Debate ‘08” series.
“I was in charge of getting ideas together for students. The administration would come to me for my opinion on big events,” he said.
GreenPope also had the opportunity to meet all of the guest speakers on campus.
“I met Jason Mraz backstage and followed Anderson Cooper around all day,” said GreenPope.
Aside from his involvement with the “Debate ‘08” events, GreenPope is the Ethics Conducts Chair for Student Government Association (SGA).
Believing that SGA gave him the opportunity to get involved, GreenPope stresses other students who want to become more active on campus should visit the SGA office.
“You can see how to get involved with different clubs or activities. We’re the liaison between students and clubs on campus. You can come to the office and see how to get involved with different clubs or even help start making a new club.”
GreenPope also volunteers in the Admissions office, helping out with special events like open houses and Admitted Students Day.
“The biggest thing I always advocate, either at Admitted Students Day or just to my friends, is just to get involved. There are so many opportunities [at the University].”
When not on campus, GreenPope is either working at American Eagle or spending time at the beach or park.
When asked how for advice on success at the University, GreenPope stresses the importance of campus resources.
“My best advice would be to really use campus resources. Get to know the offices and who is in charge, go to advisement…just keep in touch with everything on campus. Really use campus resources to their fullest extent.”
