The final total for the University’s Hofstra for Haiti fundraising and matching campaign is in. $13,300 was raised through student and staff donations. The University matched that, bringing the total to $26,600.
This information was among the topics of discussion at a Hofstra for Haiti meeting on Friday, March 5. Also discussed at the meeting were the plans for the April 9 Hofstra for Haiti arena concert, the April 13 Day for Haiti (events to be announced), and the April 26-30 Refugee Camp(us) simulation in Calkins Quad.
Fabolous and Juelz Santana are “in the works of being confirmed” to perform on April 9 at the Mack Sports Complex, according to meeting notes, and they’re still searching for a third artist. Ticket prices and sponsors are still being determined.
The week-long Refugee Camp(us) is “an aggressively public recognition that every man, woman, and child on this earth is human and, as such, should be valued equally,” according to program co-coordinator Josh Gwin. There will be four simulated refugee camps set up in the Calkins Quad: Burma (Myanmar), Sudan, Colombia, and Haiti. The event is open to students, faculty and staff, all of whom have the option to participate for a day, a night, or the entire week.
Among the events being planned are “True Life: I am a Refugee”, and a Hunger Banquet. Guests will draw tickets at random that assign them to an income category and the corresponding meal.
