Some underground rappers prefer to stay out of the spotlight because at times, their fans may consider them sell-outs for going public and subject of media scrutiny. But for Stephan Tirado, things are different. Stephan Tirado is 20 years old and lives in Hempstead, NY. As a kid he moved around a lot and was unable to establish a permanent living situation. Tirado began rapping at the tender age of 11. He plans to “take the world by storm,” said Megan Costello, owner of SmartyPants Records. Tirado doesn’t just rhyme about the troubles of being on the street, violence, guns and sex. He is a true poet. His lyrics are more wholesome and derive from within. He has performed everywhere from clubs to coffee houses. While he is doing his thing promoting behind the scenes, he also encompasses his alter ego—”Phonetic.”
“Phonetic” is his more playful side, a guy who tends to flirt with the ladies and goes to parties; while at the same time is a serious soul who feels his music with his heart.
In asking Tirado about the unique style of rap he executes, he replies “I can touch on all levels of genres. My lyrics are witty, I don’t lack dynamics and I use words that aren’t everyday, but people know what they mean—they just don’t use it.” He is signed to an independent label, “SmartyPants Records.” His style of rap has an edgy sound, tremendous use of electrics and catchy hooks. His sound is hard and has his own style that is unlike any other rapper in the game. His lyrics are witty, yet meaningful at the same time. If you’re interested in seeing Tirado perform, he says, “I play in Long Island, Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, and soon I have a tour coming up. Dates will be posted on my new website which will be available in a week: StephanTirado.com.” This upcoming star’s songs will be on iTunes come March on MySpace and Facebook.
