Hofstra women’s lacrosse dropped to 2-3 on the season after losing to no. 4 University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon at Shuart Stadium. The Quakers were too disciplined and talented to the Pride and won 8-4. Giulia Giordano led Penn with three goals.
The loss is the Pride’s second in a row, following a loss at the University at Albany. Hofstra head coach Abby Morgan thought the team’s play improved from its previous loss at Albany, despite being doubled up on by Penn.
“We competed and we played a lot more like ourselves, which feels better than Albany,” Morgan said.
The problems for the Pride were on the offensive end, as they scored just four goals, a season low and recorded no assists in the game.
Junior midfielder Maryann Miller was one of the few bright spots up front, scoring two goals.
“We weren’t moving as we should have been moving,” Morgan said. “I said downstairs in the lockerroom, ‘It’s like we were trying to get it going, trying to get it going the whole game’.”
Penn struck early and often, staking itself to a 3-0 lead 16 minutes into the first half. Miller put the Pride on the board with under six minutes to play in the half on a free position shot, but Penn came rightback with a goal of its own.
Sophomore attacker Claire Brady scored with six-seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 4-2.
Hofstra opened the second half scoring on a free position goal by senior attack Stephanie Rice. Penn scored the next four goals though to lead 8-3. Miller tacked on a final goal for Hofstra with seven minutes to play and Penn possessed the ball for much of the remainder of the game, killing the clock.
Junior goalie Jackie Pandolf allowed the eight goals but also recorded 13 saves in the game.
