Since winning season three of NBC’s The Sing Off, a capella group Pentatonix has been impressing fans with their YouTube covers and medleys, and even two of their own original songs. Their second album, PTX, Vol. 2 lives up to fans’ expectations.
There are five original songs on this album, in addition to four cover songs. Pentatonix’s take on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s “Can’t Hold Us” maintains the rap element of the song while still staying true to their a capella roots, and Ellie Goulding’s “I Need Your Love” becomes a vocalized version of the electro- inspired pop song.
The most impressive cover, however, is a medley of Daft Punk songs that shows off how well Pentatonix can transition from song to song and make someone forget they are listening to a capella music.
“Run to You”, an original song, stands out as one of the best tracks on the album, and is performed entirely in five part harmony. The effect is hauntingly beautiful.
In comparison, Pentatonix’s original song “Natural Disaster” is upbeat and over flowing with energy. Filled with clapping and stomping, the song plays to the members’ strengths, showing off their impressive vocal ranges and beat boxing.
If you like a capella music, or even just like listening to new takes on some of your favorite songs, PTX, Vol. 2 is definitely worth a listen.
