WOMEN’S BBALL
Northeastern sophomore guard Shaleyse Smallwood was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Week for Nov. 28 after averaging 24 points per game in her team’s last two contests, including a career high 26 points in a 20-point win over Providence College.
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) center Quanitra Hollingsworth was awarded CAA Rookie of the Week honors after averaging a double double last week (12.5 points per game and 14.5 rebounds per game).
FIELD HOCKEY
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association has announced the 2005 Division I All-American teams, which include seven athletes from the CAA. Old Dominion University’s Janelle Engle, the CAA Player of the Year, received first team honors, while teammate Dana Sensenig was named to the second team along with Northeastern senior Lauren Edelmeier and James Madison senior Baillie Versfield. Northeastern junior Whitney Shean, Pride junior Doni-Melissa Jantzen and Drexel senior Rachael Bloemker all received third team honors.
MEN’S SOCCER
The ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America soccer teams were announced on Nov. 22. Delaware junior Matt Haney was named to the first team. Haney, a two-year co-captain, was a three-year starter on defense and has four career goals and one assist. Drexel senior Tim Mochan was named to the third team.
VOLLEYBALL
VCU lost to No. 21 Purdue, 3-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Purdue’s Danita Merlau registered a match-high 16 kills and the Boilermakers won in three games (30-27, 30-24, 30-21). Junior outside hitter Ludmila Fracescatto, an All-CAA first-team selection who had 14 kills to lead her team, led the Rams in the losing effort. This was VCU’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the team finished with an overall record of 22-12.
