Let’s face it-if you live on Long Island, odds are you know at least one Billy Joel fan. With over 12 studio albums, Billy Joel is one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most talented and celebrated recording artists. His last original rock album, River of Dreams, displays Joel’s ability to combine thought-provoking, yet poetic lyrics with beautiful musical arrangements. And while critics maintain that Joel’s last rock effort did not live up to albums such as The Stranger or Piano Man, many see it as just another musical evolution from a man’s already amazing 20-year career.
Exploring various aspects of the human race, River of Dreams is a noticeably more jaded and pessimistic look at the world. The first track is a great example of this; “No Man’s Land is a challenging look into modern society and urbanization. “Great Wall of China” continues with this cynical outlook. While the soulful, almost bluesy feel of the song suggests a fun rock tune, the lyrics depict the story of Joel’s greedy and selfish brother-in-law that eventually stole millions from the musician. In track four, “Minor Variation,” Joel’s voice really gets a chance to shine. His vocal ability always seems to be overshadowed by his incredible songwriting and piano skills, yet his solid baritone voice is truly incredible.
“All About Soul” shows off Joel’s more optimistic, romantic side with lyrics like “It’s all about soul / It’s all about faith and a deeper devotion / It’s all about soul / ’cause under the love is a stronger emotion.” “Lullabye,” written for Joel’s daughter, is a soothing and gorgeous ballad featuring just the musician and the piano. The album’s title track is reminiscent of Joel’s old work, with catchy hooks, driving percussion and Gospel influences. The last track, “Famous Last Words,” is both a great reflection on life and a fitting conclusion to what the musician said would be the last rock album of his career.
River of Dreams seemingly closed one chapter of Joel’s career and opened another, as he turned his attention to other musical pursuits. We can only hope, however, that River of Dreams will not be his last stab at rock ‘n’ roll.
