A LOOK AHEADAfter this weekend, the Pride and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) are tied for first in the conference with an equal record of 7-0. The next three games for the Pride are more favorable than VCU’s, as the team plays at Georgia State University (1-6) and UNC Wilmington (2-5) and at home against James Madison University (4-3).
WASHED AWAYThe Pride was scheduled to play William & Mary last Friday, but due to the immense amount of rain, the game was postponed and rescheduled for Saturday afternoon. The Pride has lost four of the last five meetings between the two teams, including first round Colonial Athletic Association Tournament losses in the past two seasons.
The Pride came out in the first half with one thing on its mind-victory. The extra day off to prepare clearly helped, as the Blue & Gold netted three goals in the game’s first 20 minutes.
The scoring charade started after Marie Curtin’s direct kick off the top crossbar. Amber Albrecht finished the job by half-volleying the ball into the right post. Five minutes later, Edel Malone won a ball, beat two defenders and placed a pass to her left for Nina Nanavrakis, who took one short dribble and put the ball right under the crossbar. The third and final goal for the Pride came in the 18th minute off another Marie Curtin direct kick. Curtin sent a beautiful cross to the far post where Chrissy Arnone was waiting to volley it straight into the net for her eighth goal of the season.
Arnone has been fantastic this season, expect her to be involved with plays like this for the rest of the season.
WINNING WAYSAt the end of last weekend, the Pride set a school record for most consecutive wins (10). This is the record for both single season and overall. In 1993, the Pride won its last game and the first eight in 1994.
