INEXPERIENCED IN ACC
In only the Pride’s third meeting with an ACC team, it was victorious after failing in its first two attempts. The Pride played the University of Maryland twice in consecutive years from 1996 to 1997 and was shut out both times.
ONE YEAR AGO
At this point last season the Pride was 3-6 and wasn’t playing on nearly the same level as it is now. Only needing three more wins to tie last years total, the Pride could be on its way to its first playoff berth in the CAA.
FLOOD’S STREAK ENDS
Sophomore Gary Flood has finally checked out of a game. Against Clemson, Flood was worn from the travel, and more importantly by the humidity.
He played in 26 consecutive games without a substitution, tying the longest such streak under coach Richard Nuttall.
Arni Gunnarsson, who played the entire 2002 season, also holds the record. Prior to coming out against Clemson, Flood had played every minute of every game in his NCAA career.
BRICK WALL IN NET
Junior goaltender Matthias Gumbrecht’s has tied his shutout total from a year ago, four. In nearly 800 minutes of playing time, Gumbrecht has been steady and is building confidence with every shutout. On the downside for Gumbrecht, his goals against average is up to 1.46 from 1.09 from last year, and he’s already allowed 13 goals in nine games. Last year he allowed only 17.
THIS WEEK
Last year the Pride beat William & Mary, 2-1, and went into that game with a two-game winning streak. Similarly, the Pride has built confidence with its win over Clemson. It would help to win the early conference games now. Old Dominion will also be hard to beat; however, the Monarchs could be stopped if the Pride defense holds up.
