Hofstra University prides itself that its students manage to master a wide range of talent and skill. The Black Student Union’s Unity Showcase is one of the many platforms where students can showcase their talents.
On Wednesday, Nov. 11, BSU held their annual Unity Showcase, where students and their friends and families were able to show the Hofstra community their talents.
The night began with the introduction of the host K.C. Clark, also known as versatilenstyle on Instagram and YouTube. He is primarily known for his YouTube skits. In addition to being a YouTube personality, K.C. Clark is also a dancer and actor.
The show was host to many talented guests including Hofstra’s step team Strictly Steppin’, HofBeats, TranscenDance and Imani.
Both Imani and TranscenDance featured a playlist of hit songs including a few new artists like Kehalani in their dance routines mix. As always, their performance wowed the crowd and got everyone involved.
This year’s Unity Showcase also featured a number of individual students who came out to showcase their talent.
Jesse Tabansi, his stage name Jarhead, is a junior here at Hofstra but his home is Nigeria.
The Nigeria native has performed at numerous Hofstra events including the CSA Vybz show. He has also performed at Princeton University.
Tabansi performed three of his songs, including his most popular “Still Nigerian.”
“Still Nigerian” is a tribute to his roots and is a catchy song infused with afrobeats. All of his music can be found on SoundCloud.
Another set of students was Muarrissa and Nathaniel. Being both sophomores they have never performed in the Unity Showcase before but you would not have known that by watching their performance.
Nathaniel played the keyboard as an accompaniment to Muarrissa.
She sang an arrangement of Tori Kelly’s “All in My Head” which included her own rendition of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.”
The audience cheered at the sound of her soulful voice and Nathaniel’s keyboard skills.
Muarrissa was not the only artist performing her own rendition of songs that night.
Nandee Mignon created a melody of “trap songs” and sang them as R&B covers, as a twist to the usual R&B songs.
Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” were two of the songs featured in her melody.
These two songs are always playing on the radio and it was nice to hear them as an R&B mix. The R&B rendition was a shock to many in the audience, especially since we are so used to the usual radio edits.
This year’s Unity Showcase was a great display of student talent.
