The school year has begun, and you’re most likely telling yourself – once again – that this will be the year that you finally get your academic life in order. With just a little effort, managing your classes won’t be as difficult as you think. It just requires some organization, time management and a positive attitude.
The most important way to keep yourself on track during the school year is to stay organized. Most planners have a calendar section and a place for you to keep notes for yourself each day. Use these spaces to keep track of club meetings, tests and other important assignments and events. Try to make a schedule for yourself so that you can guarantee time for everything you need to get done.
Procrastination is hard to avoid in college, but breaking up an assignment will make completing it less stressful. Set aside a little time each day to complete one part of it. Many cringe at the idea of starting an assignment ahead of time, but just scheduling 15 minutes a day to do research or outlining an essay before you write it can make a huge difference.
It is also a good idea to make connections with others in your class, which includes students, but also your professors. Make a good impression on your professors and ask them any questions you have – whether it’s about your coursework or even advice pertaining to your major – early on. Don’t be afraid to email them or visit them during office hours. Your classmates will also be a huge help to you during the semester. Make friends in class and exchange numbers so that you have someone to contact with homework questions.
Be sure to develop good habits now. Don’t let November come around and suddenly begin to tell yourself, “I’ll wait until the spring semester.” If you want to eat healthier, start going to the gym more, or perform better in your classes, stay organized and plan ahead. The key is to start now and keep up a positive attitude. This is your fresh start to succeed in anything you want!
