MEN’S CROSS COUNTRYThis past weekend, the Pride traveled to Iona College to compete in the 11th Annual Tournament. John “Paddy” Doyle Meet of Champions. Led by sophomore Rudy Martinez-who finished ninety-ninth overall-with a time of 27:16.1, the Pride finished in twentieth place out of 38 teams, including four that are nationally ranked. The University of Arkansas won the meet quite handily by having six of the top seven spots in the race. The top overall finisher was Richard Kiplagat of Iona, with a time of 23:54.4. The Pride will be back in action next Saturday when it travels to the Fairfield University Invitational.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRYMary Sullivan continued her hot start as she helped the Pride achieve a seventeenth overall finish at the Iona Meet of Champions. Sullivan finished seventh overall with a time of 21:57.4 and was also the top freshman by an astounding 22 seconds. Her time was the second best in school history in a 6K race. The Pride’s next best finish was Jen Campbell’s 23:22.8, good for forty-sixth overall. The overall winner was Jen Scherf of Harvard University, with a time of 21:19.3. Cornell University won the team title with all seven of its runners finishing in the top 20, including an eleventh place finish by Aerial Emig. The Lady Pride will also participate in the Fairfield Invitational on Saturday.
MEN’S GOLFThe Pride kicked off its season with a fourteenth place finish at the Cornell Invitational at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca, NY. Sophomore Blake Gianniny and freshman Sean Davy tied for forty-third place overall to pace the Pride. Gianniny recovered from an opening round 83 by shooting 75 and 78 in the second and third rounds, respectively. Davy shot an opening round of 80 followed by a second round 77 and a final round of 79 to give him an overall 236 and tie him with Gianniny for the top score on the team. Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) won the tournament with a team score of 881 led by overall leader Billy Stewart, who shot rounds of 63, 71, and 78 for a total score of 212 for the weekend. The Pride will travel to Farmington, Conn. next weekend for the ECAC Division I Men’s Golf Championship.
WOMEN’S GOLFFreshman Liz Warren helped the Pride start its season off well, shooting a 164 to finish fifth overall on the weekend and led the team to a tie for eighth place at the Mount Holyoke Invitational at the Orchard Golf Club in Holyoke, MA. The Pride finished with a team score of 706 for the weekend, shooting 353 in each of the two rounds. Kim Novak was the Pride’s next best finisher with a score of 174, good for twenty-second place overall. Wellesley College took the championship with a team score of 676, led by the overall winner Susan Choi, who shot a 153 for the weekend. The Pride doesn’t have another match until Oct. 9 and 10 when it will go to Telford, Pa. for the Lehigh University Don Mershon Classic.
