DEANGELIS NEARING 100With the victory over Delaware, Pride head coach Kathy DeAngelis has a career record of 99-150-3 in 14 years as head coach. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1992, DeAngelis was the head coach at LaSalle University from 1992-1996. DeAngelis then went to Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., serving as the head coach during 1996 and 1997. DeAngelis came to the Pride in 1998 and struggled in her first three seasons at the University, compiling an 18-41 record. Since then, she has guided the Pride to four straight winning seasons, including their first postseason berth in 17 years. That year, the Pride made the CAA Tournament championship game before losing to Delaware. The Pride is 72-76 under DeAngelis. One thing that has eluded DeAngelis as head coach of the Pride is a winning record in conference play, though last year’s 3-4 record in the CAA came close.
BESTING THE HENSThe Delaware Blue Hens have had their way with the Pride during DeAngelis’s tenure, winning all eight games, including last year’s 5-1 victory in the CAA Championship game. That’s why Sunday’s victory was so sweet.
“Last year I was crying on the bus ride home. This year, it’s pure joy,” junior goalie Jessica Cowperthwait said.
The win was the first over Delaware since 1989 when the Pride won, 3-1. Delaware still leads the all-time series, 17-2.
TOUGH ROAD AHEAD
Despite being tied for first in the CAA, the Pride has seven of its 10 remaining games against CAA teams. The Pride goes back on the road to face Northeastern on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Huskies joined the CAA this year and made the NCAA Tournament in 2004 as a member of the America East Conference. The Pride then returns to Shuart Stadium for a 1 p.m. game against Drexel on Sunday.
