Humans of Hofstra — December 6, 2016

Tai Davis I originally came to Hofstra to be an opera singer. At my high school we had NYSSMA [New York State School Music Association]. I performed a solo and my music teacher chose songs that were opera based, so that’s what really got me into [opera singing]. I was actually in the opera in January of last semester. I fell through with it kind of because, at Hofstra, I found that it was more based on being a teacher and that’s not what I wanted to do. So now I am doing public relations, which will prepare me to go into the fashion industry, which is something I’m interested in. I really like fashion and beauty. Actually, I [do] PR for ASA, which is the African Student Association here at Hofstra. I handle all of the public relation events, like making flyers, organizing the events and making the club actually enjoyable. After participating in ASA, I decided to change my major to public relations with a music minor.
Amoy Browne-Baird I really like music! I play the piano, alto saxophone, guitar and African drums. I played African drums when I was little because I would play for my church, but in regard to the alto saxophone, what happened was I went to a school in Brooklyn and they gave me a saxophone. I was like, “Wow this is really fun” and began to think that I should learn how to play the piano so I can be better at the saxophone and be able to tune it. From there, I began to look at covers and started learning how to play solos. I ended up teaching myself how to play the piano. Since I knew how to play the saxophone, I knew how to read music, so that’s how I learned how to read music on the piano. From there I was like, “Everyone says that it’s hard to play the piano on strings.” I ended up getting a piano and I swear I didn’t play for, like, six months, and then after six months it came back to me quickly. I started writing my own covers and songs. I used the piano and guitar to create my own melodies. I never realized that what I did with music was a talent. People did tell me that, but I saw it as something that I did for fun.


Brandon Palmer I am part of a fraternity. It is a Collegiate Black Fraternity that was established in 1906 and our founder’s day is coming up this Saturday, so it is going to be 110 years since we have been established. We are having our party this Saturday at Hofstra USA, so it’s going to be great. It will definitely be a party. I also like to play sports. I play basketball in my free time [and] work out. I used to play football in my high school. If Hofstra still had a football team I would have definitely played. My favorite football team is the Ravens. I was really attached to my parents so Hofstra seemed like a great option where I could be independent, but also closer to home. Something about the campus just drew my attention and I just got that feeling, like Hofstra, that’s the one.
